Devant Sol Lewitt

Performance, “Devant Sol Lewitt”, Centre Pompidou, 8 avril 2025, Closure Event

Instruction

Put down the box, take out two or three sheets of A4 paper and place them on the floor.

On Monday, the doors of this place will be closed, the doors of the temple, so to speak, a temple I have frequented since it opened. The Centre Pompidou has been like a lung, a heart, a space to live and to understand. My role models and my admirations have been concentrated here, on every floor of the building. There is the place itself, but also its visitors, its curators, and so many people who have been my interlocutors and supporters over the years. As a child, I often went there with my father, for whom this place was also a resource and a source of hope for his artistic practice.

I have brought this small, semi-opaque box containing items that will allow us to follow a thread, a path, to unravel my practice. As you will see, I am using words deliberately: thread, knitting, unraveling—a vocabulary of textiles, but above all, for me, a vocabulary that evokes gestures, past gestures, somewhat outdated (I am thinking of knitting, even if it is coming back into fashion), gestures that have also long been associated with women. From knitting to Sol Lewitt’s Wall Painting, the step may seem unattainable, it is possible that I am straying, or that I am leading us astray.

So let’s look for a thread.
