Atlas, nébuleuses du Sphinx by Suzan Vachon is divided into five constellations, each addressing a question that, like the Sphinx, invites us to delve into the depths of oblique research in the hope of finding answers. Research and wonder, as crucial positions, allow for a sensitive grasp of the state of things. Suzan Vachon’s atlas, like Warburg’s, configures the inner state of a quest for beauty and terror that compromises through “the art of composition,” as Jean-Luc Godard calls it when speaking of film editing. The friendly, even loving invitation she extends to us is marked by an immense desire to recognize those who create images and those who discuss them, revealing through the rhetoric of enigma the meanings and contradictions of her era.
